چکیده

This thesis addresses some of the issues relating to the construction of a regeneratively modelocked, fiber ring laser for high repetition rates. The equations governing feedback are derived, and experimental performance of the system with various filter bandwidths are given. The results are compared with those of active modelocking without stabilization. Pulse stabilization in the actively modelocked laser is reviewed, and a comparison between three mechanisms exhibiting pulsewidth-dependent loss (spectral limiting)-sideband limitng, SPM + filtering, and modulator-induced lossesis discussed. Motivation and a plan for future work are outlined. Thesis Supervisor: Erich P. Ippen Title: Elihu Thomson Professor of Electrical Engineering A Regeneratively Modelocked, Fiber Ring Laser

Frequency detuning properties of EDFL pulses generated by harmonic mode-locking and regenerative amplification: a comparison

We compare the frequency detuning properties of optical pulses generated from erbium-doped fiber lasers (EDFL's) by using harmonic mode-locking and regenerative amplification techniques. The frequency detuning range of regeneratively amplified pulse (17.78 kHz) is wider than that of harmonic mode-locked pulses (7 kHz). The regeneratively amplidied EDFL pulse has a smaller pulsewidth (22ps), a h...

Laser modelocking and dual wavelength lasing in silicon

Nonlinear optics in silicon has drawn substantial attention in the recent years. In this research, laser mode-locking and dual wavelength lasing are achieved in a fiber-ring-cavity using an Erbium–doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) as a gain medium and a 1.7cm long silicon-on-insular waveguide as pulse compressor, a mode-locker and a Raman gain media. We show that the transient behavior of two photon...

Noise and stability of actively modelocked fiber lasers

The timing jitter of a modelocked laser is fundamentally limited by the amplified spontaneous emission in the laser cavity. While one cannot, even in principle, remove this source of noise, one does have control over the pulse timing by using filtering and modulation. In this thesis, we report on the advances made in developing the understanding of timing jitter and stability in actively modelo...

Modelocked self-frequency doubling neodymium doped fiber laser

We have demonstrated simultaneous lasing and self-frequency doubling of a neodymium and germanium doped silica fiber laser at 1.06 pm. The doubling action is provided by a self-organized phase matching grating in the fiber. The laser was modelocked using a linear external cavity which produced 600 ps pulses at 1.06 pm.

A 40 GHz, 770 fs regeneratively mode-locked erbium fiber laser operating at 1.6 µm

We report a 40-GHz harmonically and regeneratively FM mode-locked erbium fiber laser with a phase-locked loop (PLL) circuit operating in the 1.6 m region. The oscillation wavelength was extended to the L-band by using a 15 m erbium-doped fiber with an Er concentration of 3500 ppm as a gain medium. As a result, a 770 fs transform-limited Gaussian pulse with a 14 mW output power was successfully...
